Who’s At Fault In Car-Motorcycle Accidents?

There’s nothing like the feeling of the freedom you get while riding down the highway on a motorcycle, but when it comes to car-motorcycle collisions, the motorcycle unfortunately offers its rider very little protection. Given the dangerous consequences of a motorcycle collision with a car, motorcycle riders need to be on the alert for the conditions that most often give rise to accidents.

While 34 percent of motorcycle accidents are single-vehicle accidents, compared to only 19 percent of cars involved in single-vehicle accidents, most motorcycle accidents involve collisions with other vehicles. According to study results released in early 2013 by Florida’s Center for Urban Transportation research, and contrary to the popular myth of reckless bikers causing multi-vehicle accidents, 60 percent of car-motorcycle collisions are the fault of the driver of the other vehicles involved, and not the motorcycle rider.

In many cases, unaware car drivers simply don’t see the smaller motorcycles, or they misperceive the distance between their vehicles and nearby motorcycles. The most common causes of car-motorcycle accidents are collisions happening at intersections, tailgating, failure of a car to yield and distracted driving. Motorcyclists also need to be aware of road hazards, which can be more dangerous for a motorcycle than they are for a car. Things that appear minor, like potholes or uneven road surfaces, can cause a motorcycle driver to lose control.

If you’ve sustained injuries as a result of a motorcycle accident involving other vehicles, a consultation with a Tampa motorcylce accident attorney who can help you determine issues of liability and negligence and seek the compensation you deserve.
